🇬🇧 Arctic expedition is not only a physical challenge, but a lesson of listening to one's body. When temperatures drop to -40 C, every signal sent by your body is of great importance. In such conditions, even small symptoms can have serious consequences. The wind, which seems "only" cold, can actually bring frostbite to the face in minutes. Feet can gradually frostbite, which we only notice in the evening, when entering a warm tent.

During exposure to extreme conditions, every gesture must be consciously controlled. Even the moment, I have to take off my gloves for a moment, can be critical. Are numb fingers already frostbite or temporary poor circulation? You have to be able to tell the difference. Our body sends subtle signals that we must be able to read. The Arctic teaches that details matter. It teaches sensitivity to the body's subtle signals and how to respond to them. In this hostile environment, the ability to listen to the body becomes crucial for survival and success.

🇵🇱 Wyprawa do Arktyki to nie tylko wyzwanie fizyczne, ale także prawdziwa lekcja słuchania Twojego ciała. Gdy temperatury sięgają -40 C, każdy sygnał wysłany przez Twoje ciało ma ogromne znaczenie. W takich warunkach nawet małe objawy mogą mieć poważne konsekwencje. Wiatr, który wydaje się „tylko” zimny, może w rzeczywistości przynosić odmrożenia twarzy w ciągu zaledwie kilku minut. Stopy, mogą stopniowo odmrażać się, co zauważamy dopiero wieczorem, gdy wejdziemy do ciepłego namiotu.

Podczas ekspozycji na ekstremalne warunki, każdy gest musi być świadomie kontrolowany. Nawet chwila, w której muszę na moment zdjąć rękawiczki, może być krytyczna. Czy zdrętwiałe palce to już odmrożenie, czy chwilowe słabsze krążenie? Musisz umieć to rozróżnić. Nasze ciało wysyła subtelne sygnały, które musimy umieć odczytać. Arktyka uczy, że detale mają znaczenie. Uczy wrażliwości na delikatne sygnały ciała i reagowania na nie. W tym nieprzyjaznym środowisku, umiejętność słuchania ciała staje się kluczowa dla przetrwania i sukcesu.

🇬🇧 Peak 41 and Mera Peak in the first sun.

In the spring 2023 I climbed Island Peak. On the glacier we were greeted by dawn. In the distance there was a ridge, and Ampu Lapcha Pass, the only passage toward those peaks. Challenging wall descending from the pass seemed impossible. A 1,5 year later, I descended the same wall cautiously. 3 days earlier we had climbed Baruntse (7152m), the peak that lies beyond the left edge of photo. A thing once impossible became a fact.

Sometimes it seems that things are beyond our reach, unfeasible. But as we develop skills, the unimaginable becomes possible. We needed work and experience. What was impossible during first climb, will become more and more achievable with each subsequent training. Each new experience brings the strength and confidence needed to pass the difficulties.

It's worth looking for things that seem beyond our reach - these are the things that allow us to grow.

Wiosną 2023 roku wspiąłem się na Island Peak. Na lodowcu przywitały nas pierwsze promienie dnia. Przed nami wznosiła się grań, a w niej przełęcz Ampu Lapcha, jedyne przejście w stronę tamtych szczytów. Karkołomna ściana, która opada z przełęczy, wydawała się nie do pokonania. Półtora roku później schodziłem ostrożnie tą samą ścianą. 3 dni wcześniej weszliśmy na Baruntse (7152 m), szczyt leżący za lewą krawędzią tego zdjęcia. Rzecz kiedyś niemożliwa stała się wykonalna.

Czasem wydaje się, że rzeczy są poza naszym zasięgiem, niewykonalne. Jednak gdy rozwijamy umiejętności, niewykonalne staje się możliwe. Potrzebowaliśmy pracy i doświadczeń. To, co podczas pierwszej wspinaczki będzie niemożliwe, z każdym kolejnym treningiem stanie się coraz bardziej osiągalne. Każde nowe doświadczenie przynosi siłę i pewność, potrzebną do przejścia trudności.

Warto szukać rzeczy, które wydają się poza naszym zasięgiem - to właśnie one pozwalają nam się rozwijać.

🇬🇧 Even in the city, I am able to train for expeditions. Sometimes that means the stairwell of a skyscraper. Often - an elevated treadmill at the gym. And sometimes a run up one of the city's hills, even if it's barely 30 meters.

How to make the staircase or treadmill approach more challenging? The easiest way is to add weight. The easiest to find in any of these places will be.... water. Just throw 10 liters in your backpack and your workout takes on a different dimension. At the gym or outdoors, I often take a lightweight backpack with a large Dromedary Bag water reservoir in it. This 10-liter reservoir is now 20 years old and has never failed me. In the desert it helped to survive 2-3 days, now it is training luggage, easy to fill and empty.

Do you add weight during your training sessions? If so, what do they look like?

🇵🇱 Nawet przebywając w mieście jestem w stanie trenować pod kątem wypraw. Czasem oznacza to klatkę schodową wieżowca. Często – uniesioną na maxa bieżnię na siłowni. A niekiedy podbiegi na jedno z miejskich wzniesień, nawet jeśli ma marnych 30 metrów.

Jak sprawić, żeby podejście schodami lub na bieżni było bardziej wymagające? Najprościej dołożyć sobie obciążenia. Najłatwiejszym do znalezienia w każdym z tych miejsc będzie... woda. Wystarczy wrzucić do plecaka 10 litrów i trening nabiera innego wymiaru. Na siłowni czy w plenerze, zabieram często lekki plecak, a w nim duży zbiornik na wodę Dromedary Bag. Ten 10-litrowy bukłak ma już 20 lat i nie zawiódł mnie nigdy. Na pustyni pomagał przeżyć 2-3 dni, teraz jest bagażem treningowym, łatwym do napełnienia i opróżnienia.
